What wall thickness are Outbound hatches suitable for?
Our hatches are easy to use in a wall of 60 to 80 millimeters. If the wall thickness is less than 60 millimeters, the wall must be filled and reinforced on the inside by means of a frame. For wall thicknesses above 80 millimeters, the frame does not extend to the interior side of the wall.
Can the lock be made keyed alike with the other products in the order?
The products in your order will have identical locks, unless otherwise specified by you.
Are sizes on demand possible?
The fiberglass-reinforced plastic parts are produced as a single piece using molds. Because of this, we provide beautiful seamless products, but sizes on demand are not available.
Are the products sprayable?
The fiberglass-reinforced plastic parts are gel coated. Sanding these lightly allows the frame to be sprayed without any problems. For this purpose, we can supply the self-adhesive sealing rubbers separately. Please inform us at point of order.
Why add a hatch to your expedition vehicle?
A hatch in your expedition vehicle offers practical access to compartments you can't or don’t want to reach from the inside, such as storage areas, toolboxes, gas or water tanks, and technical systems. At the same time, it protects against moisture, dust, and theft. However, in an expedition vehicle, every opening can be a potential weak point, for insulation, water ingress, thermal bridging, or unwanted access. A well-designed hatch makes all the difference. Our hatches combine a strong, insulated structure with a flush and secure closure. They are developed for vehicle builders and adventurers who don’t want to compromise. That way, your vehicle remains functional and reliable, even under tough conditions.
Materials for expedition vehicle hatches
Outbound hatches are made of glass fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP) with a closed-cell foam core. This construction offers excellent insulation without thermal bridges. The outer shell is flat and formed as one continuous piece, which reduces weak points. As a result, the hatch sits flush with the vehicle wall and is easy to install. The black anodised latch housing is made of corrosion-resistant plastic.
Technical specifications
- Materials: GFRP outer shell + insulating foam core
- Colour: standard finish approximates RAL 9003, gelcoat layer suitable for repainting
- Flush fit: hatch aligns closely with the wall for a clean finish
- Opening angle: 110° for maximum access
- Wall thickness compatibility: fits 60–80 mm walls; other thicknesses require filler or reinforcement solutions
- Locking system: keyed alike with other ordered hatches, windows, or doors
Options for Outbound hatches
- Keyed-alike lock system: all hatches and related components (windows, doors) can be delivered using the same key
- Surface finish: the gelcoat layer on the GFRP shell is lightly sandable and can be repainted in your preferred colour
- System integration: for best results, combine the hatch with windows and roller screens to create a consistent and reliable setup
Installing our hatches
Our hatches are delivered as complete, pre-assembled units. Keep the following guidelines in mind during installation:
- Allow clearance around the frame (preferably 10 mm all around) to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction
- For wall thicknesses outside the standard 60–80 mm range: use internal filler or reinforcement structures to support the frame properly
- Check wall flatness before installation; a flat mounting surface ensures better sealing and ease of installation
- Ensure proper sealing of the edge gaskets, especially in dusty or humid environments, this is essential for long-term reliability
